A gas company may take legal action against a construction firm whose digger smashed a pipe and sparked a major scare. About 30 people were admitted to hospital after a digger broke a 6-inch cast iron gas main while excavating at a golf course. The emergency services evacuated 250 people from surrounding buildings, including a restaurant. The hospital reported those being admitted suffered from nausea, dizziness and shortness of breath, but all were later discharged. There was a strong stench of gas in the air. Some of the roads were closed to traffic, and golfers were asked not to play the 167th and 18th holes until further notice 15/7/2004
